A very perceptive article. A valuable reference for anyone pushing back against the right wing and centrist media’s onslaught on Polanski.

It seems like everything of value that I read these days comes as a reminder of something I already know. I'm sure others are experiencing this strange effect, of feeling trapped rather than freed by knowledge. These are the times we live in. But thanks, David, for this update on just how vile the British establishment can be when called on to protect their portfolios and directorships.

As it happens, only moments before opening this email, I'd been discussing John Mann, the "Antisemitism Czar", with a friend. Mann's reason for wanting to replace Green Party electoral candidates, detailed here, was a classic example of antisemitism at its most tortured. He proposes that because publications with which he no doubt sympathises have resorted to racist caricatures of Polanski, the response ought to be a purge within the Green Party. This solution- final or not- plays on the old trope (if I may employ such a discredited term) that antisemitism is caused by the presence of its victims or their politics:

‘All four are antisemitic. Which is precisely why removing Green Party extremist candidates is necessary.’

Amazing. Simply amazing. But, as I suggested in my opening sentence, hardly news, particularly coming from a man like Mann. Again, many thanks for this timely post.
